Delivery and removal is always FREE within 50 miles of Brenham, Texas, on all purchases of $400.00 and up, and FREE within 100 miles on purchases over $2000.00. Delivery is available beyond 50 miles for a modest charge.

Warranty & Protection

We pick up and return merchandise for warranty work at original delivery address. Sales receipt is required for all warranty and service work. Sorry, but we cannot service soiled merchandise, including bedding, since most manufacturers' warranties exclude that. Labor charges may apply depending on warranty.

Many repairs can be completed on-site by our factory-trained service personnel.

Company History

Celebrating 107 years in business, Schleider Furniture Company offers convenient shopping and service for furniture customers in Brenham and the greater Central Texas region.

Founded in 1902 by Herman Schleider, his brothers and children, the first store – J. Schleider’s Sons- opened on South Austin Street on what is now Bank of Brenham’s site and flourished as a cotton warehouse, dry goods store and saloon.

During the decade that followed, the hub of Brenham’s business was its railroad, so in 1915 the Schleiders broke ground on a new store in its present location across the street from the railroad depot (now Washington County Chamber of Commerce) at 307 South Austin Street. With railroad tracks running along its southern perimeter and another set serving the passenger depot across the street, the store was situated ideally to receive merchandise and to offer relief, in its saloon, to weary rail travelers.

Site preparation for the new store revealed a surprise that would change the store’s blueprints. Originally designed as a two-story building, the foundation crew discovered water sand (quicksand) in the store’s footprint. Stabilizing the site required pumping water out of the sand and then creating Schleider’s third “floor”, a basement sitting atop a sixteen inch deep cement mat criss-crossed with 120,000 pounds of reinforced steel. Schleider’s basement is so stout that it was designated an official civil defense shelter in the Cold War years. To this day, the building is solid and has no cracks.

Prohibition (1920-1933) necessitated another change of business for Schleider’s. Unable to operate the saloon anymore, the store began its transition to a furniture store and expanded three stores to Taylor, San Marcos and Bellville under the leadership of Herman’s son, “Mr. Ben” Schleider. Under Mr. Ben, named 1961 Furniture Retailer of the Year, Schleider’s operated the furniture industry’s first retail computer software system. (Schleider’s neon sign, installed by Mr. Ben and still in operation today, was Brenham’s first neon sign.)
In 1975, the Schleider family sold the store to Herbert Maddock and his wife, Marjorie. Maddock, who had retired as an executive with Joske’s of Houston, was also honored as Furniture Retailer of the Year (1983). He was a modern retailer who proudly continued the store’s tradition of excellence, innovation and family-run leadership. His son, John, carries on that tradition along with our staff of Friendly Folks, some of whom have worked for Schleider's all of their working lives!

John and his wife, Kate, share the store’s executive office where they at their antique partner’s desk, a treasure from an old Union Pacific railroad depot and a symbol of the store's long history of building on the strength of experience.
